Cross Country Team runs first meet of the season

Cross Country has the fewest competitions of the fall sports season, logging only seven meets between Aug. 31 for the first meet of the season and the conference championships on Oct. 17. The first competition took place at Cottage Grove Middle School against East Ridge, Park, Cretin Derham-Hall and Trinity School.

The girls took first place with a total of 21 points. East Ridge was second with 34 points and Park third with 78. Remember, Cross Country is scored like golf, the lowest team score wins. The top seven runners for each team were assigned points based on their finishing place.

Leading the way for Hastings was Linnea Ronning who finished second overall with a run of 21:12.54. Ivy Brandenburg finished fifth with a 23:01.38. Lucy Burmeister finished sixth with a 23:44.11. Sienna McCoy finished seventh with a 23:55.78 and Elise Atkins rounded out the top 10 in ninth with a 24:01.92.

“The meet went really well; we had some great performances all around!” said head coach Joe Rabaey. “We took a big jump over our first race of last season, including huge improvements from Olivia Schuster, Lucy Burmeister and EC Atkins.”

On the boys’ side, the team finished second with a score of 56. East Ridge claimed first with a score of 21.

Tristan Herbst was the fastest Raider in fifth place with a time of 17:40.19. The first-place runner finished with a 16:19.99. Aidan Stoltz finished tenth with a time of 18:12.93. Noah Quigley was right behind Aiden with a time of 18:28.77. Parker Stoltz took 13th with a time of 18:44.67. William Carry took 17th with a time of 19:09.15 and Parker McGinnis rounded out the top 20 with a time of 19:29.23 for 19th place. Gabe Peterson was the final scoring runner in 23rd place with a time of 19:37.93.

“East Ridge is a very talented team so to take second place behind them is another great result,” added Rabaey. “We had huge improvements across the board for the boys, and our average time of 18:27 for the top five is already better than any performance we had last year. All the boys ran really well, and we are coming off a great offseason training program. In particular we saw huge jumps from Parker Stoltz, Will Carry and Gabe Peterson, who improved a ton over the summer.”

Raider fans will have three chances to cheer Cross Country onto victory before the team has a little break. Thursday Sep. 7 at 4:00 p.m. and the Conference Prelims on Sep. 12 at 5:00 p.m. both at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. On Sep. 19, they travel to Hudson Middle School for a 3:45 p.m. start.
