Two thoughts are coming together regarding the upcoming school board election. These thoughts are influenced by the various yard signs throughout Hastings.
One. I encourage voters to be cautious about voting for a block of candidates. Most signs I see are grouped together in fours. The last election there was a group of three. Many voted all three as a block. Subsequently, there was tension and disruption on the board. I am confident no one wants a repeat. Take the time to get to know each candidate. Make up your own mind.
Two. Recently, a new sign has appeared with one cluster of yard signs. It states, "Trust Teachers". A sign like this is too simple. What am I being asked to trust teachers with? I respect teachers. They have put in the time and effort for schooling. Many desire to help the students flourish and succeed in life. Most teachers put in great energy to accomplish their work. On the other hand, does this sign ask the community to blindly trust all facets of schooling to teachers? What about trusting parents and other community members to also help our young to succeed?
Can there not be cooperation with respect and trust between all?
