Vote union endorsed candidates

To the editor:

Soon we will elect four new school board members. I am shocked by how much the candidates vary when it comes to understanding the roles of a school board, identifying the most pressing needs of our students, and valuing our district staff.

I will vote for candidates who understand the role of a school board, endorse the technology levy, appreciate our district professionals and the education and experience they have, champion the ideal of a free public education, support our libraries, value all students, invest in mental health and multi-layered support for students, comprehend the significance of accessible education, and prioritize recruiting and retaining staff amidst a severe shortage of teachers and paraprofessionals.

As a member of Education MN, Hastings, I was part of the process of endorsing candidates. I appreciate that this effort was completed entirely by our local teachers, that all teachers in our Hastings union were included in the process via emails and videos, and that all either chose to attend the vote or were able to share their concerns and suggestions with those who did attend the vote. Even though I am not a union representative, I was involved in each step of the process, and my voice was valued.

Vote on November 7th or vote early at the district office or the government center. Please join me in voting for the candidates who have been endorsed by three local unions—the teachers’ union, the food service workers’ union, and the St Paul Regional Labor Federation: Matt Seeger, Matt Bruns, Mariah Ring, and Brandy Wentzler.
