The Raider Volleyball Season opened on Aug. 27 with a trip to Inver Grove Heights to take on the Simley Spartans. The trip up Highway 52 was not without some struggles, but ultimately, the Raiders came out on top 3-2.
Hastings jumped out to an early double-digit lead in the first set, and it looked as though they severely outmatched the Spartans. Then, a switch flipped and Simley stormed back, tying the game eventually winning the set 25-23. Simley continued its control doubling up the points on the Raiders. The Spartans’ double-digit lead did not last long with the Raiders storming back, winning set two 26-24.
Set three and four were also mirror images of each other. Hastings took set three confidently 25-16 in a mostly back and forth affair. No one team went on any big runs, but Hastings strung a couple more points together each possession. In set four, the Spartans did exactly that, strung two or three points together in a possession to the Raiders one or two points. Simley took the fourth set 25-19.
The final set in the best of five is won by the first to 15 instead of 25 and Hastings finished the exciting victory 15-9 to take the overall win.
The next chance to catch the Raiders in action is Sept. 4 at 6:15 p.m. at Two Rivers then on Sept.5 and 6 at Apple Valley for a two day invitational tournament.
