Safety, environmental enhancements included on River to River Greenway
A section of the River to River Greenway running through Mendota Heights is now open for the public to enjoy.
The 1.4-mile segment brings the existing trail to Dakota County greenway standards, making it safer and easier to ride, while improving stormwater features and erosion control along Interstate Valley Creek.
“This project enhances walkability and connectivity in our communities,” Dakota County Board Chair Laurie Halverson said. “The improvements through this popular park make the route safer and more accessible for all users.”
Project enhancements include:
• Wider bridges and landscaping
• Trail crossing improvements
• Connections to local trails and sidewalks
• Seating, wayfinding and interpretive signage
The River to River Greenway runs nearly 8 miles, connecting Mississippi River points from Lilydale to South St. Paul. The Mendota Heights project benefited from a $585,000 Clean Water Fund grant and involved several partners:
• Dakota County Parks
• City of Mendota Heights
• Dakota County Soil & Water Conservation District
• Lower Mississippi River Watershed Management Organization
The project’s next phase includes a grade-separated tunnel under Dodd Road at Highway 62.
