Support local community service organizations

By Brian Schommer

We are blessed with several civic organizations that provide various services to our communities. From Lions to Rotary, Knights of Columbus to clubs and groups that you may not even realize exist, we are truly blessed. Many of the service groups offer activities for the general public to serve as fundraisers to help support their mission. Today, we will share a few of these activities that you can put on your calendar to participate in while you are out and about. On Sunday, February 11th, the Hastings Rivertown Lions Club is holding its 2nd annual Super Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. until noon to support the Hastings Fire Department’s Wellness Program. The event will be held at Resurrection United Methodist Church located at 615 West 15th Street in Hastings. The menu will consist of scrambled eggs, French toast, ham, fruit, juice, milk and coffee. There is no fixed price for the breakfast and a free will donation is requested. 100% of the net proceeds will again be donated to the Hastings Fire Department Wellness Program. If you are making plans to be out and about on Sunday, February 11th in Hastings, be sure to put this one on your calendar.

The Cottage Grove Lions are very active in the community with two big events coming up as well. On March 2nd, in partnership with the Cottage Grove VFW Post 8752 (The Red Barn), a blood drive will be held for the American Red Cross will be held and on Sunday, April 2nd, they will be hosting their Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. Stay tuned for more information to come on these two events but if they seem like something that would fit your interests, put them on your calendar so you don’t forget.

The Hastings Wrestling Club began collecting cardboard in the bin at the Coborn’s parking lot in Hastings. If you have a bunch of cardboard boxes taking up space in the garage since Christmas and you are going to be out and about by Coborn’s, simply flatten the boxes and drop them off. The Tennis Sanitation bin is located near the northwest area of the parking lot. It is a winner, winner, chicken dinner type situation as you get some garage space back and recycling is a great way to help the environment. As long as you are in the area, stop by Coborn’s as they have a great chicken dinner in their deli.

Since we are marking the calendar in advance for a few things, and speaking of community service organizations that do a lot of great things, you may as well mark your calendar for Saturday, September 9th when the Hastings Area Rotary Club brings… you will have to wait for the official announcement but Rivertown Live 2023 will be incredible this year. What is Rivertown Live? It is a concert, produced by the Hastings Area Rotary Club that has brought the likes of Chicago, Sara Evans, Gabby Barrett, Foghat, The Guess Who and many others to the Hastings Riverfront. Rivertown Live is the main fundraiser for the local Rotary club.

Do you belong to an organization that has an upcoming event that people could participate in while out and about? If so, please let us know about it by emailing [email protected] and we will give it some exposure, as long as it fit the “feel good” vibe. Do you like to volunteer and be an active contributor to your community? If so, all four of the organizations noted in today’s feature are looking for more members. You can Google them or see if they have social media pages (hint: all four have Facebook pages) and reach out for more information. It is a guarantee that if you volunteer, you will be able to get out and about much more often.
