The 2024-25 season marked a significant milestone for the Hastings High School Dance Team, as they competed for the first time as an official sport within the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL). This transition from club status to a recognized sport not only elevated the team's profile but also underscored the dedication and talent of its members.
This is the first MSHSL sport that Hastings High School has added since boys and girls lacrosse in 2011-12. The addition brings the total volume of independent sport offerings to 29. 22 student-athletes in grades 7-12 were on this first-ever competitive team. They were comprised of three teams; varsity Jazz, varsity Kick and JV Jazz. They competed in a full Metro East Conference schedule. Varsity Jazz finished third out of five teams, varsity kick took fourth and JV jazz took third. The team also participated in the Section 3AAA post-season team competition in both jazz" and kick, finishing eighth and nineth, respectively, out of 12 teams.
Season Overview
Throughout the season, the Raiders showcased their versatility by participating in both High Kick and Jazz categories. Their routines were characterized by intricate choreography, precision, and a palpable passion for dance. Competing in Section 3AAA, the team faced formidable opponents but consistently demonstrated resilience and growth.
In the High Kick category, the Raiders delivered performances that resonated with both judges and audiences. Their routines, set to dynamic music selections, highlighted their synchronization and stamina. The team's commitment to refining their techniques was evident in each competition, reflecting hours of rigorous practice and a collective drive for excellence.
The Jazz routines allowed the dancers to explore expressive movements and storytelling through dance. Embracing contemporary themes, the team captivated spectators with their emotive performances, fluid movements, and cohesive formations. Their ability to convey deep narratives through dance set them apart in various competitions.
Leadership and Senior Contributions
The success of the season can be largely attributed to the leadership and experience of the graduating seniors Ella Meyer and Lily Powell. Their dedication not only set a high standard for performance but also fostered a culture of mentorship within the team. As they prepare to embark on new journeys, the impact of their contributions will remain a cornerstone of the program's legacy.
Emerging Leaders
Looking ahead, the team is poised for continued success, thanks to the underclassmen who have shown remarkable potential and readiness to step into leadership roles. Their enthusiasm, combined with the foundation laid by their predecessors, ensures that the Raiders will continue to thrive in future seasons.
Coaching and Support
The transition to MSHSL competition was a challenge guided by the coaching staff led by Kayla Sohn. Mindi Pagel and Katie Givens were the inaugural season’s assistant coaches. The coaches’ vision, adaptability, expertise and ability to learn on the fly were instrumental in navigating the adaptations needed to compete with the best in the state. Their commitment to fostering both technical skills and personal growth among the dancers created an environment where athletes could excel and their ability to ask the right questions and learn to be an MSHSL dance team helped set the team up for future success.
The support from the Hastings community also played a pivotal role. Parents, alumni, and fans provided unwavering encouragement, filling stands at competitions and celebrating the team's achievements. This communal backing not only boosted the dancers' morale but also reinforced the significance of the program within the broader community.
Looking Forward
As the season concludes, the Hastings High School Dance Team can now reflect on a year of historic achievements and personal growth. The transition to official sport status has opened new avenues for competition and recognition. With a strong foundation and emerging talent, the future looks bright for the Raiders. The experiences of this season have not only enriched the dancers' high school journey but have also set the stage for continued excellence in the years to come.
In celebrating their accomplishments, the team extends gratitude to all who supported them and looks forward to building upon this season's successes. The Raiders have not only made history but have also set a precedent for future teams to aspire to.
