The Rotary Student of the Month for February is Sara Myers. Myers was nominated by HHS staff members Mrs. Cindy Benson, Mr. Andrew Lutz, and Mr. Tim Haneberg. Here is what they had to say:
“It is with our great pride to nominate Sara Myers for the Rotary Student of the Month. Sara is the definition of a servant leader and applies her skills to all areas of her life such as school, community, and with her peers. The activities she is involved in at Hastings High School are Link Crew, National Honor Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Spanish National Honor Society, and student council. She is also a multi-sport athlete participating in tennis and managing wrestling. Sara also excels in the class. She holds a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. while taking AP Macroeconomics, College Psychology, College Spanish, College Criminal Justice, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, AP Stats, APUSH, AP Chemistry, AP Language, College Literature, College public speaking. As stated earlier, Sara is someone who seeks opportunities to serve her school, community, and peers with her leadership ability. Her coaches and teachers were thrilled with the opportunity to discuss her skills and describe how important she is to their team or activity.”
Link Crew supervisor Mrs. Benson says, “Sara is a worthy recipient of the rotary student of the month. She has been an outstanding Link Crew leader and a student leader in the classroom. Whether in Link Crew or AP Chem, Sara came with a positive attitude and was ready to tackle anything she was asked to do. She is sincere and always willing to help in areas you may not have realized you needed extra assistance with! She leads by example and I know her linkies have benefited from sharing herself and her experience here at HHS. Sara is an outstanding young lady and she will be successful along any path she chooses. I fully support this nomination for Rotary Student of the Month.”
FCA supervisor Mr. Lutz added, “News flash! Sara Myers is an absolute rock star! I first had the opportunity to work with Sara as a sophomore when she served as a leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle that I advise at Hastings High School (she is now a 3-year leader), and she was a student in my AP American History class. In both situations, I was immediately impressed by Sara’s ability to lead, and to do so in such a way that her peers appreciated her vision and were motivated to get behind her efforts. She is very conscientious, organized, and a hard worker, and seemingly has a hand in just about every activity or group at our high school! I realize that it is usually not recommended to play favorites in the profession of teaching, but the opportunities to work with a student such as Sara are quite rare as she is one of the most respected students by the faculty at Hastings High School. Sara’s ability to keep up with the daily rigor of our Honors program and do so successfully, is a tribute to the determination, discipline, and overall work ethic that she has developed while in high school and I am confident that she is going to do big things in the future when she leaves HHS!”
Finally, wrestling coach Mr. Haneberg had these words to describe Sara. “Sara is one of the most responsible students I have ever worked with. She is giving of her time and talents to all those around her. Sara is more than a manager on the wrestling team. She uses her kindness and empathy to help wrestlers or anyone else that is a part of the team to help them work through solutions to difficult problems in a mature and thoughtful manner. Sara’s work ethic and positive attitude are second to none.”
In Sara’s free time she likes to cook, bake, and do puzzles. Next year Sara plans to attend Clemson and major in chemical engineering with a speciality in biomolecular studies.
