Hastings girls tennis picked up its first dual victory of the season during a busy opening week that included four matches in four days.
The Raiders opened the week Tuesday, Aug. 25, with a 7-0 loss to Eagan at the Hastings High School Tennis Courts. Hastings then hosted its quadrangular Friday, Aug. 28, facing Rosemount, East Ridge and Park of Cottage Grove. The Raiders dropped 6-1 decisions to Rosemount and East Ridge, then earned a 4-3 victory over Park to finish the week with a 1-3 record.
Eagan swept all four singles and three doubles matches in the season opener, but Hastings had several competitive sets.
At No. 3 singles, Evy Hogan fell to Evelyn Wells 6-3, 6-0, while Briella Bauer lost 6-2, 6-2 to Lauren Yan at No. 4 singles. Emery Hedeen lost 6-0, 6-0 to Amelia Johnson at No. 1 singles, and Maelyn Kirk fell 6-0, 6-0 to Brynn Gleason at No. 2.
Hastings was more competitive in doubles. Annie Majeski and Andee Kochendorfer pushed Janine Macariola and Paige Poppinga at No. 2 doubles before falling 7-6, 6-3. Nolee Kochendorfer and Megan Sieben also had two close sets at No. 3 doubles, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Greta Beckwith and Reagan Robbins.
Sophia Johnson and Samantha Seaman fell 6-1, 6-2 to Katherine Poppinga and Marin King at No. 1 doubles.
Hastings returned home Friday for three more duals during the Hastings Quadrangular.
Rosemount defeated Hastings 6-1, with the Raiders' victory coming at No. 1 doubles. Hedeen and Sophia Johnson defeated Daly Halla and Bella McDonald 7-5, 1-6, 10-5.
Nolee Kochendorfer also went three scores at No. 4 singles. She won the opening set against Anya Koppula 6-3 before Koppula took the second set 6-2 and the deciding score 13-11.
Rosemount won the remaining singles matches in straight sets. Kirk fell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, Hogan lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Andee Kochendorfer fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. In doubles, Bauer and Majeski lost 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, while Sieben and Harriet Johnston fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
East Ridge also defeated Hastings 6-1, with the Raider point coming from Sieben and Nolee Kochendorfer at No. 3 doubles. The Hastings pair recovered after losing its opening set 6-0 to Kendall Warner and Evian Zimmerman, then won 6-4, 10-6.
Bauer played one of the closer singles matches at No. 4. She won the first set against Julia North 6-0 before North responded with a 6-3 win and took the deciding score 10-8.
Kirk fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Seaman lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Andee Kochendorfer fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. In doubles, Hedeen and Sophia Johnson lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, while Hogan and Majeski fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2.
Hastings broke through against Park, winning four of the seven matches for a 4-3 dual victory.
Hogan earned a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Ashlyn Mullen 6-3, 6-2. Nolee Kochendorfer added another point at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Evelyn Johnson.
The Raiders earned the deciding portion of their team total in doubles. Bauer and Majeski defeated Bailey Ledman and Natalie Karels 7-6, 1-6, 10-2 at No. 2 doubles. Sieben and Andee Kochendorfer also went three scores at No. 3, recovering from a 6-4 opening-set loss to defeat Clara Wright and Olivia Hassebroek 6-1, 10-5 over the final two scores.
Park won two close matches. At No. 2 singles, Alaina Post defeated Kirk 6-3, 6-7, 10-4. At No. 1 doubles, Gabriella Stepka and Chloe Newhouse edged Sophia Johnson and Seaman 6-4, 5-7, 11-9. Park's Alivia Luu defeated Hedeen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Hastings now begins a busy stretch of five varsity duals in eight days. The Raiders travel to South St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, and Red Wing at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. Hastings visits Simley at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, then returns home to face Farmington at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, and North St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
