The inaugural season for the Hastings Raiders Dance Team has been full of fun, energy and most importantly, learning. The dancers and coaches were involved in dance for quite some time before they formed the first ever MSHSL dance team for Hastings, and they are both learning a lot about this kind of competition. The technical skills required to dance are there, it is more about how to put those skills together to score the most points within the school competitions.
Hastings debuted their high kick routine on Dec. 3 at Simley and Head Coach Kayla Sohn gave the results.
“Our second meet was awesome! We re-performed both jazz routines and debuted our kick routine. This is huge for Hastings Dance Team as this is the first time we have ever competed in a kick routine. We are beyond proud of these dancers for learning a new style of dance quickly and performing so well. JV jazz received third, Varsity Jazz received fourth and Varsity Kick received fourth at this meet,” said Sohn.
The girls spend the next week prepping for the second performance of their high kick routine at South St. Paul on Dec. 10. That meet was scheduled to be high kick only, which allowed the girls to really hone the kick routine. Sohn was excited to have that week to make some changes in hopes to increase scoring.
At South St. Paul, the high kick routine placed fourth again but saw dramatic improvements overall.
“We did a ton better the second week and ultimately had gained kicks back that we had lost at our first meet,” added Sohn.
The girls will take this week to fine tune both routines in preparation for the Conference Championships on Dec. 20 starting at 6:00 p.m. at Tartan High School.
