Letter to the Editor: Extremely Qualified School Board Candidates

To the editor:
There are five candidates who have filed to run for Hastings School Board. Three of these candidates stand out as extremely well qualified.
Mark Zuzek - has dedicated his career to serving students as a teacher, principal and superintendent. His knowledge of schools is second to none. Because of his depth of experience in various roles, he understands policy, operations, finance, legal and the role of the school board. He has been an active member of the board for the last 4 years and serves on more committees than anyone on the board. Mark has been a voice of reason on the board during turbulent times in which others have worked to undermine teachers and students.
Kendal Larson – comes from a family of educators and administrators and believes deeply in the importance and power of quality public education. He appreciates the important role of the school board as part of the entire system of public education. He is familiar with the destructive impact the infusion of politics on local school boards has had across the country including in Hastings. Kendal’s professional experience in systems management and information technology provides a unique and valuable perspective into the system of a school district.
Melissa Kinneman – is a therapist who works exclusively with children. She is passionate about the need to have strong public schools that accept and support each and every student and for every student to feel safe and supported by the entire system, including the board. She is familiar with recent decisions made by board members who have worked to undermine this. Her educational background and professional experience as well as her empathy for children provide a valuable perspective for serving all children in our district.
In addition to being extremely well-qualified, all three candidates care deeply about our students, staff and community. Please join me in voting for Mark Zuzek, Kendal Larson and Melissa Kinneman for school board on November 3rd.
