Hastings Schools look to install filters to keep PFAS out

The Hastings School District is working to make sure drinking water in its buildings is free from PFAS contamination.
The schools are served by City of Hastings water which is above the federally mandated guideline of six parts per trillion of forever chemical contamination. While the city works on plans to develop three treatment plants to attach to city wells to treat the contamination, Hastings Schools Superintendent Dr. Tamara Champa told the ISD #200 Board of Education at its meeting Wednesday, May 22 that it is taking proactive measures against PFAS.
The district is seeking to put filtering systems in place at all school buildings.
“We have been having a lot of conversation about PFAS and having conversations with the city as well. Just to let you know, the district is working on replacing filters, filters that do filter for PFAS and are receiving quotes for what we might be able to do at each of our buildings for the entire building,” she said.
