The Hastings Police Department (HPD) in conjunction with the Hastings Fire Department and Dakota County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) will hold their annual National Police Week open house this year on May 16th from 5-7 p.m. This time, the event will be hosted at the Police Department at 150 3rd St. East.

There will be a variety of emergency services vehicles and equipment for residents to explore, there will be hot dogs, popcorn, and water provided to visitors, and the winner of the Sound the Siren event will be announced. The Sound the Siren event was a friendly competition between HPD and DSCO to see who could raise the most money and food for the Food 4 Kids program at Hastings United Way. Police Chief David Wilske and Sheriff Joe Leko are on the hot seat for their teams. Whichever department wins, their leader will be smashing a pie in the other leader’s face. Last year, both Wilske and Leko got pied because of their rookie leader status, so this year it is for bragging rights. The pie smash will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at City Hall.

To cap off National Police Week, HPD will be participating in a fundraiser for Special Olympics on Friday, May 19th from 6-11 a.m. Police and Sheriff’s departments from all over the state of Minnesota participate in “Cop on a Rooftop” where they join Dunkin’ locations to raise money for Special Olympics. This is a fun, unique event where different officers take their turn on the rooftop and other officers take donations and offer goodies, including Dunkin’ coupons to visitors. Be sure to stop by the Hastings Dunkin’ at 1207 Vermillion Street to donate and earn a free donut for your donation.
