The cautionary tale for the Hastings football team last week was “do not look past Two Rivers.”
The Warriors came to town for a playoff football game Tuesday, Oct. 25 and revenged a 42-6 loss at the hands of the Raiders a few weeks ago.
Hastings season ended, as Two Rivers scored late to advance in the playoffs. The final score was 33-28.
The Warriors started the game with the ball at their own 22, and they methodically marched down the field and scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0 with the successful PAT. The Raider sideline looked stunned at how easily the Warriors moved the ball on them.
After a Hastings turnover, the Raider defense went to work and evened the score. Ian Pepple burst through the line forcing a fumble on the QB as he was trying to pass. Afton Majetich scooped and scored from the 39 and the game was tied at seven.
Two Rivers scored on a four play, 80-yard drive capped off by a 65-yard reception, and just like that, they had the lead back 14-7. Another Hastings turnover turned into three points for Two Rivers.
Both teams then forced punts and Hastings tied the game on a four-play, 68-yard drive with Payton Burrow scoring on the ground from 16 yards out. The Raiders still trailed, 17-14. Two Rivers scored once more to make it 24-14 heading into the intermission.
Hastings took their next two possessions and picked up 14 more points. All of a sudden, the Raiders had the 28-27 lead with almost six minutes left in the third quarter.
The scored remained that way until Two Rivers marched down on another 11 play drive and scored with 9:34 left in the game.
The Warriors stopped the Raiders attempted comeback twice and one Hastings score was negated by penalty.
With the loss, the Raiders end at 4-5. Two Rivers followed the upset over Hastings with another upset over Bloomington Kennedy and now they face the St. Thomas Academy Cadets on Friday, Nov. 4.
