The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) has not yet expanded the State Wrestling Meet to include an official girls’ team portion, so the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association (MWCA) held their own Team Duals State Meet. The meet featured 16 teams from around the state with the requirements of the teams be able to fill all 13 weight classes.
The teams were from Apple Valley, Bemidji, Brainerd, Byron, Chatfield, Forest Lake, Hastings, Hopkins, Hutchinson, Milaca, Moorhead, Mora, Pine Island, Sauk Center-Melrose and St. Michael-Albertville (STMA). STMA was the host site for the tournament where Hastings finished third overall.
Head Coach Tim Haneberg is one of the biggest proponents of girls wrestling in the state. His high-energy approach and excitement to see the girls perform on the mat is second to none when it comes to supporting these young ladies.
A few days before the tournament, Haneberg could not help himself, “This is going to be the real deal. Every team that's one of the top teams in the state is going to be there this Saturday at St. Michael High School. Our team is poised to do really, really well there. We have a great squad from 100 pounds all the way to 235 and I really expect big things.”
Big things happened including a big heartbreaking, one point loss which would have put them in the championship match.
