Football dominates Burnsville, looks towards Mankato East regular season finale

The Hastings Raiders found their stride again in Week 7, delivering a commanding 49-7 win over Burnsville at Todd Field. The Raiders entered the night sitting at 3-3 and looking to rebound from the tough loss to St. Thomas Academy the week before. At 1-5, Burnsville came in shorthanded with injuries at key positions, and Hastings wasted little time taking control of the game.
From the opening whistle, the Raiders’ offense, defense, and special teams all clicked. Junior running back Zack Shatek reminded everyone why he is one of the top rushers in Minnesota, breaking off highlight runs nearly every time he touched the ball. He carried nine times for 232 yards and four touchdowns, averaging an astounding 25.8 yards per carry, and added a 74-yard punt return for another score. By the end of the night, Shatek had not only dominated the game but also climbed into first place in the statewide rushing race with 1,498 yards on the year, now holding a 161-yard lead over Maple Grove’s James Engle.
Head Coach Dana Strain praised Shatek afterward, calling him “special” and noting that sometimes even he finds himself in awe of the junior’s ability to turn broken plays into game-changing touchdowns. Strain also credited the offensive line, who consistently created lanes that allowed Shatek to break into the open field. Shatek is not only special on the field, but he also takes care of his offensive line off the field. Any time he can rush for 200 or more yards, he takes the line out for ice cream on the weekend.
The Raiders built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter alone. Shatek opened with a 43-yard scoring run, followed quickly by his 74-yard punt return. Minutes later, he capped another drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. In the second quarter, he added a 78-yard sprint to the end zone, and after a defensive stop, quarterback Carter Hanson connected with Matt Foss on a 60-yard strike. Foss finished with three catches for 85 yards and that score. Before halftime, Shatek slipped through for a 32-yard touchdown, giving Hastings a 42-0 lead. The scoring barrage was capped in the third quarter when sophomore Nate Adricula pounded in from seven yards out for his first varsity touchdown. Burnsville avoided the shutout in the fourth with a 16-yard run by Caleb Kamara, but the game had long been decided.
Strain highlighted the defensive effort just as much as the offensive explosion.
“One of the biggest things we did well the whole night was corral their backs,” he said, noting that Burnsville’s playmakers had caused problems for other opponents. Time and again, the Raiders had four or five defenders in the backfield, shutting down runs before they could develop. Burnsville managed only 163 total yards on 45 plays compared to Hastings’ 481 on 42 plays. Defensive pursuit was a key factor, and Strain said he was proud that every player who got on the field continued to compete and tackle well.
Special teams also shined. In addition to Shatek’s highlight reel punt return, kicker Cody Weber went a perfect seven-for-seven on extra points. Kick coverage units bottled up Burnsville’s returners, keeping them from finding open lanes. Foss contributed three kickoff returns for solid field position, while Grant Birken and Carter Herman-O’Brien chipped in on return duties.
Hanson was efficient through the air, completing six of seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Beyond Foss’s big play, Elliott Hagen added a 30-yard catch, while Shatek and others contributed short receptions. Hanson also guided the offense with composure, spreading the ball when needed and leaning on the ground game to set the tone.
Adricula’s touchdown and solid rushing line of 78 yards on 16 carries gave the Raiders another bright spot. He and Birken combined to keep the chains moving when Shatek wasn’t carrying the load. Hagen added 25 rushing yards as well, giving the offense balance. Altogether, Hastings racked up 369 rushing yards on 36 carries, averaging over 10 yards per attempt. That dominance on the ground allowed the team to control tempo and wear down Burnsville’s defense.
The win improved Hastings to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in section play. The Raiders sit second in Section 3AAAAA behind St. Thomas Academy, who remain unbeaten and the top-ranked team in Class AAAAA. Statistically, Hastings has now outscored opponents 199-190 on the season, showing how far the defense has come since earlier shootouts. Shatek’s 20 rushing touchdowns lead the team, while Foss leads the receiving corps with 453 yards and three scores. Hanson has passed for 830 yards on the year with four touchdowns, while the defense has allowed just 128 rushing points compared to Hastings’ 136.
Coach Strain acknowledged that the next matchup will not be as forgiving as Burnsville. Hastings closes the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Mankato East, a program that has surged in recent years and already knocked off perennial power Mankato West. Strain said his team knows the challenge that awaits, describing East as “a very good football team with high-end players” and pointing out that the Raiders have never played there before. It will be a new environment and a chance to measure themselves against one of the top programs in southern Minnesota. After that, the postseason begins, with the first section game set for Oct. 21 at the high seed and round two scheduled for Oct. 25.
For Raider fans, the Burnsville game was a reminder of what the team can look like when all phases are clicking. The offense showed explosiveness, the defense swarmed to the ball, and special teams added momentum-shifting plays. Shatek’s remarkable season continues, but perhaps more importantly, the Raiders showed that they are peaking at the right time with the playoffs around the corner.
