Darlene M. “Dolly” Ward, age 92 of Hastings, died suddenly but peacefully at Regina Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon, Sept.13, 2023.

Darlene Mae, the daughter of Myron and Philippine (Durren) Anderson, was born on June 5, 1931, in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Dolly grew up in Rockbridge where she attended grade school and learned to fly with her dad prior to his sudden passing. On June 9, 1949, Dolly was united in marriage to Harlen A. Ward in Rockbridge, and they were blessed with eight children and nearly 75 years of marriage. While Harlen was an over-the-road trucker, Dolly raised their family and made sure everyone was well cared for. In 1958, they moved to La Crescent, Minnesota and eventually to Hastings in 1973 where they have lived on Walnut Street ever since. Dolly loved to bowl, and even scored many 300 games. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and taking many pictures where she would explore family heritage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Kenneth and Jeffery; and by her grandson, Nicholas.

Dolly is survived by her loving husband of seventy-four years, Harlen; children, Myron (Janelle) Ward, Larry Ward, Susan (Roger) Klein, Sandra (James) Knower, Ted (Diane) Ward, and John Ward (friend, Marie Mike); thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren with another on the way; sisters, Shirley Anderson, Bertha King, and Judy Shirerman; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In keeping with Dolly’s wishes, a private family service will be held. Interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Dolly’s family requests memorials be made to homeless veterans in her memory.
