Thursday, Feb. 3 was another chilly night for the Hastings Raiders Alpine Ski Team, but that did not stop this crew from a successful race at Welch Village. Varsity girls secured a hard-earned second place finish out of six teams.
Top 10 finishers for the Raiders were seventh grader Kate Nowak with a 2nd place finish followed by sophomore Abbigail Pelava in fifth place, and senior Taylor Pelava in ninth place. Freshman Alexa Loritz placed 18th, junior Mallory Karnich placed 22nd, sophomore Jolie Pettit placed 27th, eighth grader Claire Caturia placed 38th, senior Kira Lindstrom placed 47th, senior Mia Molitor placed 52nd, followed by seventh grader Maddie Herdt who placed 56th.
Participating for the JV Girls team were seventh grader Maddie Paulson placing 22nd, and eighth grader Addison Maniak.
Varsity boys dominated the field once again with a first place finish out of six teams. Top 10 finishers for the Raiders were junior Aaron Herber who placed fourth, followed by sophomore Cole Caturia placing sixth, junior Zach Rother placing seventh, and senior Caleb Kimmes placing eighth. Top 20 finishers were senior Charlie Millholin who placed 12th, followed by freshman Gavin Molitor placing 15th, and sophomore Jackson Reents who finished in 19th place. Junior Jacob Shield placed 23rd, senior Joe Peine placed 24th, and sophomore James Millholin finished in 29th place.
JV Boys also commanded the field with a first place finish out of five teams. Top 10 finishers were freshman Finn Caturia who placed second, followed by sophomore Charlie Vier placing third, and eighth grader Will Bauer who finished seventh. Seventh grader James McNamara placed 15th, freshman Trent Schulte placed 22nd, eighth grader Mason Leary placed 28th, senior Fernando Castello placed 31st, sophomore Haydon Gunter placed 33rd, freshman Jadon Mike placed 34th, and participating in his first race was freshman Chase Sampson.
Congratulations to graduating seniors Kira Lindstrom, Mia Molitor, Taylor Pelava, Fernando Castello, Caleb Kimmes, Charlie Millholin, and Joe Peine-they are leaving big ski boots to fill. The Raiders head north once again to Wild Mountain on Feb 9 to compete in the Minnesota State High School League section 4 class A alpine race. Good luck to Hastings Raiders Alpine!
