The Raider Wrestlers had another productive week with the boys taking down Irondale and Eden Prairie and the girls had individual successes at the first ever Girls Metro East Conference Championships.
The Girls
The Raider Girls participated in the first ever Metro East Conference Girls Wrestling Championships on Saturday, February 1 and they had a lot of success.
Girls Coach Angie McLay expressed her pride in the strides the girls have made this year.
“This last weekend 19 girls placing at the Metro East Conference tournament! Simply incredible!” she said.
Samantha Allen - Second Place
Kira Poellinger - Fourth Place
Allison Weinzettel - First Place
Trinity Yates - Third Place
Hannah Precious - Fifth Place
Ellie Levine - Second Place
Seebrina Chudzik - Fifth Place
Annabel Norquist - First Place
Leighton Robinson - Third Place
Maya Campbell - Fourth Place
Emma Taylor - Fifth Place
Olivia Levine - First Place
Audrianna Dahlberg - Second Place
Cashawn Brooks - First Place
Josie Giangiacomo - First Place
Lily Watts - First Place
Amelia Miller - First Place
Avery Levine - Second Place
Maddy Radspinner - Second Place
“It has been an incredibly exciting and historic year for the team! It’s so clear that the hard work and dedication from these young ladies are paying off,” added McLay. “It was thrilling to watch Hastings prove their worth at the MWCA state duals, especially with upsets against STMA, Bemidji, and narrow loss to Apple Valley. The Guillotine (wrestling newspaper/Internet forum) has had us ranked below all three of those teams since the beginning of their rankings. making how we performed much more incredible!”
McLay always has an eye on the nation wrestling scene and recent events has her fired up for the future. “The progress for girls in wrestling this year is amazing. The NCAA sanctioning women’s wrestling is a huge leap forward. More colleges will likely follow suit and create programs, opening up even more opportunities for these athletes. It’s truly a moment in history for the sport!”
The girls have sections coming up this weekend where they will travel to Redwood Valley High School for a two-day tournament that starts at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb 7 and continues early in the morning on Saturday, Feb 8. McLay hopes to see their successes continue with her girls having a chance to punch their ticket to the state meet at the end of the month.
“I feel truly blessed to be a part of the Hastings Wrestling program and a part of history in the making!” she said.
