The Hastings Raiders girls basketball team wrapped up its most recent week of action with a tough road test Monday, Dec. 22, at Hill Murray School, where Hastings fell 94-61. The Raiders competed throughout the night but ran into a hot-shooting Hill-Murray squad that built momentum early and never let it slip.
Hastings came out with energy and matched baskets early, putting together a solid first half on the offensive end. The Raiders scored 31 points before the break and showed good balance, moving the ball and attacking inside. Hill-Murray answered nearly every run, though, pouring in 54 first-half points to open up a double-digit lead heading into halftime.
The second half followed a similar script. Hastings continued to battle, finding success around the rim and at the free throw line, but Hill-Murray’s depth and perimeter shooting proved difficult to slow. The home team added 40 more points after the break, while Hastings added 30 of its own, continuing to compete until the final buzzer.
One of the bright spots for the Raiders was the play of Mya Bauer, who delivered a strong all-around performance. Bauer was efficient from the field and aggressive getting to the line, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Violet Schult also had a productive night, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc and giving Hastings a lift offensively. Piper Brockman controlled the glass, pulling down double-digit rebounds and helping the Raiders generate second-chance opportunities. Kayleigh Giesen contributed with her passing and defense, while Jessica McTague added scoring and activity in the backcourt.
Despite the final score, the Raiders showed flashes of the balance and effort they continue to build on as the season moves forward. With several games coming up in quick succession, Hastings will look to turn lessons from this one into sharper execution and renewed confidence.
Mya Bauer led with 27 points, Violet Schult added 15, Jessica McTague had 7, Piper Brockman scored 6, and Kayleigh Giesen finished with 3.
Fans will have multiple chances to see the Raiders back in action. Hastings travels to Park of Cottage Grove on Saturday, Jan. 3, for a 1 p.m. tip, then heads to Simley on Tuesday, Jan. 6, with a 7 p.m. start. The Raiders return home Friday, Jan. 9, to host North St. Paul at 6:30 p.m., followed by another home game Tuesday, Jan. 13, against Apple Valley, also set for 6:30 p.m.
