Until now, the weather has not been kind to the Alpine and Nordic ski teams, but they have been able to get by with artificially made snow to get their practices in. The colder temperatures and a slow-moving snowstorm across the region helped fix that for those passionate about strapping the long boards to their feet.
The first meet for Alpine was held Friday morning, December 16 at Wild Mountain near Taylors Falls. Raider Alum and Alpine Skiing Head Coach Jason Gergen returns to lead the talented group of Raider skiers.
“Wild (Mountain) was well…… WILD!” said Coach Gergen. “Snow conditions were difficult today, but our skiers overcame. Congrats to the girls’ team of Abbi Pelava, Alexa Loritz, Kate Nowak, Mallory Karnick, Jolie Pettit and Claire Caturia on a seventh place finish out of 25 teams. Overall top finishers were Abbi in seventh, Kate was 25th, and Alexa finished in 28th place. Mallory, Jolie and Claire all skied well and helped secure the top 10 finish.”
Gergen then spoke about the spectacular finish by the boys.
“The boys overcame some tough course conditions to finish in first place! Congrats to Jackson Reents, Aaron Herber, Cole Caturia, Zach Rother, Gavin Molitor and Jacob Schield on winning the Wild Mountain Invite beating 27 other teams. Jackson finished on top of the field beating out over 170 competitors. Aaron finished a strong seventh place and Cole rounded out the top 10 in ninth. Gavin delivered much needed points to secure the win and Jacob and Zach put in a great effort in support of the team.”
The next chance to catch the Alpine team in action is Thursday night, December 22, 5:00 p.m. at Welch Village. If you have never been to an alpine meet, know that you need to dress very warm. If you think three layers is enough, you should probably add a fourth. Access to heated areas has been limited the last few years. Also, if you have a scrap piece of carpet or a smaller old rug, bring that with to stand on. Hand and foot warmers are your best friend at ski meets. Keep in mind, the forecast for Thursday is a high of four degrees and a low of negative six. Those temps can be comfortable if you dress appropriately. These tips brought to you by the parents of the ski team.
