Josie Stepan 4th Grade Teacher at Pinecrest

When Josie Stepan says teaching in Hastings is in her bloods, it’s not exaggeration. You see, her grandfather served as superintendent for ISD200 for 22 years. In addition to these family ties, Stepan was inspired at a young age by her classroom teachers – so much in fact that they decided to follow in their footsteps.

“From a young age, I developed a passion for learning and knew that I wanted to ultimately become a teacher so that I could give back to the community that raised me, as well as foster fun and creative learning experiences for kids!” she said.

After completing her degree from Minnesota State Mankato, Stepan taught for five years in District 196, until last year when she accrued a fourth-grade classroom position at Pinecrest Elementary in Hastings. She is grateful to be teaching in the district and give back to the community that gave her to me.

“I have a lot of experience working with kids through our YMCA programs and with organized sports,” Stepan said. “Teaching is just another way I get the opportunity to connect with kids. Each year, it is impossible to connect with kids. Each year, it is incredible to watch how much students grow from September to June. “

She is amazed at how much support she has felt from families in her first year teaching in Hastings! Stepan believes parents and teachers must work together as a team to produce the best results in the classroom for children.

In her free time, you can find Josie walking around town soaking up the sun, indoor cycling or waitressing at Dan’s in New Trier.

Stepan is not along in being both a graduate of Hastings Schools, and now one of our amazing educators. It’s dedication and commitment to our schools and our community, from people like her, who help make us #200Strong!
