A Hastings man is facing two felony burglary charges and two misdemeanor domestic assault charges after authorities say an incident that began at a Hastings residence continued at a neighbor’s home on June 11.
According to court records, Maynard Lee Johnson, 37, of Hastings, was arrested by the Hastings Police Department at 10:13 p.m. June 11. He was booked into the Dakota County Jail at 11:10 p.m. that night. A criminal complaint was filed the following day, June 12, in Dakota County District Court.
Johnson has been charged with first-degree burglary, assault, first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling, domestic assault by intentionally inflicting or attempting to inflict bodily harm, and domestic assault by causing fear of immediate bodily harm or death. The jail roster also listed probable cause lesser or included charges of domestic assault and disorderly conduct.
According to the complaint, Hastings police officers were dispatched to a residence on North Frontage Road on a report of a disturbance. Dispatch information indicated an intoxicated male had thrown a bottle of alcohol at the 911 caller and locked them out of the residence.
The complaint states officers spoke with an adult woman, identified in the complaint as the victim, who said Johnson had been at her residence that night and had been drinking throughout the evening. According to the complaint, one of the victim’s daughters made a comment to Johnson about his drinking, and Johnson became upset and began yelling and screaming.
The victim first sent her children to a neighbor’s home to avoid Johnson, then went to the same neighbor’s home herself, according to the complaint. The neighbor and another adult were both present at the home.
According to the complaint, Johnson followed the victim to the neighbor’s home, took a bottle of alcohol, threw it on the ground, breaking it, and began threatening to harm the victim. The victim reported that she was afraid Johnson was going to assault her.
The complaint states the victim, and the neighbor went inside the neighbor’s home. Johnson allegedly remained outside for a period of time, yelling at the victim and the neighbor. After the neighbor told him to leave, Johnson allegedly went to the front door, hit the door, opened it, and entered the home without permission while the victim was telling him to leave.
Once inside, Johnson allegedly pushed the victim with both hands. The complaint states the neighbor again told Johnson to leave. Johnson allegedly left, then re-entered the neighbor’s home before another adult came downstairs and told him to leave.
The victim’s two children, ages eight and nine, were present when the alleged assault occurred, according to the complaint.
Officers later located Johnson outside the victim’s residence and detained him. According to the complaint, officers observed a strong smell of alcohol coming from Johnson at the time of his arrest.
The complaint also alleges Johnson threatened officers while still at the scene and continued making threats while being transported to the Dakota County Jail. A duffel bag found in Johnson’s possession at the time of his arrest contained a black hatchet and a hammer, according to the complaint.
Bail information listed in the Dakota County Jail roster showed bail set at $100,000 with no conditions. The roster also listed conditional release options of $50,000 bond or $5,000 cash, with conditions including no contact with the victim, no trespassing at addresses connected to the alleged occurrences and a one-block radius, no use or possession of firearms or dangerous weapons, surrender of firearms or weapons, no alcohol or controlled substances except prescribed medication, random testing, participation in pretrial services if eligible, and remaining law-abiding.
A domestic abuse no contact order, commonly known as a DANCO, was also listed among the conditions.
Johnson made a first appearance June 12 in Hastings. Court records listed the matter as awaiting an omnibus hearing. The next court date was listed for July 9 at 1:30 p.m. in Hastings.
The charges are allegations. Johnson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
