Trey Beissel wins title at MatBoss Tournament, team takes 10th

The Hastings wrestling team had one champion at the prestigious 2023 MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Rochester Civic Center.

Hastings took 10th as a team in the 40-team tournament. Mounds View surprised Simley and St. Michael-Albertville wo win with 300.5 team points. Simley took second with 275.5, followed by STMA 260, Kasson Mantorville 228.5, Shakopee 224, Watertown-Mayer 192.5, Scott West 185.5, Stillwater 172, Albert Lea 171.5 and Hastings 168.5.

Hastings’ Trey Beissel (127) was one of four repeat champs at the tournament. Beissel wrestled to the championship as the No. 4 seed at 127. He beat top-seeded Tegan Sherk of St. Francis in the semifinals and then took down Logan Davis of Albert Lea in the finals.

Davis led 2-1 after the opening period. Beissel had a big second period with a takedown and nearfall. He then held on to win the 7-4 decision.

Beissel told the matboss.com blog, “It’s early in the season, but a win’s a win. I got a good win out there against a really good guy.”

Blake Beissel took third place for Hastings at 121 with a 5-0 decision over Lawson Eller of New Prague.

At 215, Derrick Steinke finished in fifth place, winning by fall in 3:21 over Hunter Gruba of Forest Lake.

At 139, Raider Jack Bainbridge took 10th overall, as did Creed Peterson at 172.

Hastings girls second of 44 teams at invite

Hastings was the runner-up at the Hopkins Athena Girls High School Wrestling Invite Saturday.

Apple Valley won the meet with 392.5 points. Hastings finished second with 275. Forest Lake, Eastview and Chatfield rounded out the top five at the 44-school meet.

Skylar Little Soldier captured the championship at 155 lbs., scoring a 12-0 major decision in the title match.

Hastings had three other wrestlers in the title match. Ivy Brandenburg at 100, Josie Giangiaccuomo at 170B and Maddy Radspinner at 235 all took second place.

Placing third at 170 was Amelia Miller, who pinned her opponent in 1:32 in her fnal match.

At 124, Annabel Norquist took fourth.

At 124B, Taylor Kokurek placed eighth. Maya Campbell took second at 124C.

At 112, Allison Weinzettel took ninth, as did Trinity Yates at 112B. Darriyanah Kelly took 10th at 112B, falling to Yates in the ninth-place match.

At 118B, Fiona Olson took 12th.
