Thomas “Tom” Coakley, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, at United Hospital surrounded by his family.

Tom was born on May 25, 1936 in St. Paul. After attending Harding High School, he served his country in the United States Army, and was a proud veteran of the Korean War. After his service, he built a long and respected career at North Star Steel, where he worked for over 30 years. Tom was an extremely proud and dedicated union member.

On April 7, 1970, Tom married the love of his life, June Hanggi, and together they shared more than five decades of marriage. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather.

In retirement, Tom and June spent their winters in Florida and Arizona, eventually buying a home in Apache Junction. Tom enjoyed carving, painting, car racing, snowmobiling, and he was always up for a spirited conversation. He was a close friend of Bill W. He will be remembered for his wit, creativity, and deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Tom is survived by his wife, June; son, Chris (Trish) Coakley; daughter, Karen (Steve) Burt; granddaughter, Autumn Burt; step-grandchildren, Derek (Stephanie) Stepan, Josie Stepan; and step-great-grandchildren, Max, Weslie and Beckett.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Francis Coakley; brothers, Tim Coakley, Bill Coakley; and his infant son, Thomas Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

A Memorial Service will be held on June 27, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel, 3075 Vermillion Street, Hastings with a visitation one hour prior to the time of the service.

Tom selflessly donated his body to the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota, continuing his legacy of helping others through the advancement of science and education.

Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis at a later date.
