The Raider Softball team started the season on Monday, April 11 with a bang, defeating the South St. Paul Packers, 12-1, at home.
Hastings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kendal Jenkins tripled to right on the third pitch of the game, Reanna Reinke was walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Lauren Jenkins hit a triple scoring Reinke. Abigail Trapp singled scoring Jenkins. Sienna McCoy was walked, Mac Tryba hit a single up the middle to score Trapp and McCoy to end the first inning barrage.
In the second, Reinke hit a single then scored on Jenkins’ double to make the game 6-0.
The Packers finally got on the board in the top of the third scoring their one run, but Hastings stormed back in the bottom to score five more. McCoy made it to first on an error by the right fielder, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tryba was walked followed by Olivia Mattson. Kendal hit a single to left loading the bases. Reinke hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Tryba, Lauren hit a bases-clearing double and was brought home when Alissa Johnson took her place on a double of her own.
In the bottom of the fourth substitutions came in for Hastings starting at the seventh batter. Kylie Evans was walked to start the inning, Allie Leflay was walked as well. Emily Dombroski was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded with no outs. Addie Seleski hit a single scoring Evans giving the Raiders a 12-1 lead.
Hastings was able to quickly retire the side in the top of the fifth and earn the mercy-rule victory in five innings.
Haley Strain earned the win on the mound for Hastings striking out 11 and walking two while only allowing one hit. Hastings had 11 hits and stranded five runners. Defensively, Hastings had two errors while South St. Paul had one.
Lauren Jenkins led the batting on the day going 3-for-3 with three RBIs on two doubles and one triple. As a team, Hastings had a .524 batting average going 11-for-21 on the day. The Raiders were walked six times The Raiders will travel to Tartan on April 20 then host Simley on April 21 and host Hill Murray on April 25, all games scheduled at 4:15 p.m.
