This year’s Snoweek events started on Monday, Jan 31 with a Rock/Paper/Scissors contest in advisory and the first themed outfit day, Tropical Day. Voting for the Snow week king and queen of each grade also began. On Tuesday, the winners of the Rock/Paper/Scissors contest met in the commons to narrow things down even further and the theme for the day was Winter Sports.
Wednesday the kids picked their favorite decade to dress in, there was a tug-o-war during advisory and boys basketball at home that night. Thursday, students were encouraged to wear a white t-shirt with their own white lie on it such as “I’ll be ready in five minutes,” and they were challenged to carry their daily supplies to class in anything but a backpack. Voting for king and queen closed at 3 p.m.
Friday was the big day where each class wore their own color. Seniors were blaze orange and camo, Juniors wore blue, Sophomores green and Freshmen red. The pep fest was held in the gym at 1:30 p.m. It started out with the bands setting the mood and students talking about the week. That led into a presentation of retiring principal Mike Johnson. The students worked together to give Mr. Johnson a nice retirement gift.
“Once a Raider, ALWAYS a Raider” they told him as he opened his gift: A custom hockey jersey and a killer pair of custom tennis shoes decorated in Hastings blue and gold. The shoes were truly unique and a perfect gift from the students.
“These shoes are fantastic! One of a kind,” Johnson said later in the program when he wore them out to the floor.
The Hastings Dance team club performed. Their inclusion at this year’s school events has been incredible and these kids did an awesome job dancing in front of their peers. Next on the program was the final showdown for the Rock/Paper/Scissors contest between staff and student. The student body was represented by Freshman Chase Sampson and the faculty was represented by Language Arts teacher Mike Willette.
Gino Ziccardi was the medallion hunt winner. Johnson returned to the floor and introduced the two Rotary Students of the month, Brady Zac and Kyra Smallidge. Athletic Director Trent Hanson then introduced two students that were given the Excel Award. Emma McLay and Eddie Peine earned those honors. Then Hanson introduced the AAA award winners: Megan Brown and Ben Witt.
The courts for each grade was introduced and royalty was crowned. Freshmen: King Drew Greiner and Queen Ava Davidson, Sophomore: King Faris Ahmed and Queen Amanda Bauer, Junior: King Raymond Hartman and Queen Ava Gahler, Seniors: King Fernando Gonzalez Castillo and Queen Kendall Jenkins.
