The Hastings Raiders Nordic Ski Team concluded their 2024-25 season with a series of commendable performances that highlighted the team's dedication and growth under the guidance of Head Coach Joe Rabaey. From the Metro East Conference Championship to the State Meet at Giants Ridge, the Raiders showcased resilience and competitive spirit throughout the season.
Metro East Conference Championship
On January 29, the Raiders competed at the Metro East Conference (MEC) Championship held at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington. Both the boys' and girls' teams secured third-place finishes among five competing schools. The boys amassed 351 points, while the girls earned 151 points.
The day's events featured two races: a morning classic-style 5-kilometer race and an afternoon pursuit-style skate race. In the classic race, each skier started individually at 15-second intervals, with their times determining the starting positions for the pursuit race. The pursuit race commenced with the fastest classic racer, followed by others based on their time differentials.
For the girls, junior Linnea Ronning delivered an outstanding performance, clinching the conference championship title. Ronning led the classic race with a time of 19:05.9 and extended her lead during the pursuit, finishing with a total time of 35:21—35 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Freshman Danae Trost also contributed significantly, securing a tenth-place finish with a total time of 39:24.
On the boys' side, juniors Micah Trost and Parker Stoltz showcased their skills by finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Stoltz completed the classic race in 16:05.3, while Trost followed closely with 16:07.8. In the pursuit, Trost overtook Stoltz, finishing just one second ahead with a combined time of 30:49. Six Raiders placed within the top 20, underscoring the team's depth and competitiveness.
Section 1A Nordic Championships
The Raiders returned to Hyland Park Reserve on February 4 for the Section 1A Nordic Championships, aiming for a berth at the State Meet. The competition was fierce, with ten teams vying for the top two spots to qualify for state, along with the four fastest individuals not on those teams.
The boys' team delivered a solid performance, finishing fifth overall with 343 points. Junior Micah Trost led the Raiders, placing tenth individually with a total time of 28:18, which secured him a spot at the State Tournament as an individual competitor. Fellow junior Parker Stoltz finished 16th with a time of 30:32, while Gabe Peterson and David Tireman also contributed with 21st and 27th place finishes, respectively.
The girls' team, though limited in numbers, displayed remarkable determination. With only two competitors, a team qualification was unattainable, yet both skiers achieved personal bests. Junior Linnea Ronning improved her previous time on the same course by one minute and 41 seconds, finishing 15th overall with a time of 33:40. Freshman Danae Trost also showed significant progress, reducing her time by one minute and 50 seconds to finish 27th at 37:34.
State Meet at Giants Ridge
On February 13, junior Micah Trost represented Hastings at the State Nordic Skiing Meet held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The competition featured a qualifying sprint round followed by a pursuit round. In the sprint, skiers started at 15-second intervals based on their seed times, with the pursuit race following in a staggered format determined by the sprint results.
Trost faced a challenging course and conditions, completing the sprint in 18:31.1, which placed him 94th. Demonstrating resilience, he improved during the pursuit race, finishing with a time of 17:29.9 and achieving an overall time of 36:00.3, placing him 92nd in the state.
Reflecting on Trost's performance, Coach Rabaey remarked, "It is a tough course, and Micah's first race on natural snow in a while. We have been skiing on manmade snow all year, which is faster because it is icier, so it was a bit of shellshock racing on natural snow again. It was a tough race, but a great experience for next year! I know the skate race felt hard for him, but he really came back and attacked it in his second race and really had a great performance."
Season Highlights and Future Outlook
The 2024-25 season was marked by significant achievements and personal growth among the Raiders' skiers. The team's collective efforts led to strong finishes at both the conference and section levels, with individual accolades highlighting the season. Junior Linnea Ronning's conference championship title and junior Micah Trost's state qualification underscore the talent and dedication present within the team.
Coach Rabaey expressed pride in the team's accomplishments, stating, "Overall, he skied great. It was a great way to cap off the year!"
As the team looks ahead to the next season, the experiences gained this year, coupled with the return of key athletes, position the Hastings Raiders Nordic Ski Team for continued success. The dedication and perseverance demonstrated throughout the 2024-25 season set a strong foundation for future achievements on the snow-covered trails.
