School groups use car washes as an opportunity to raise funds

High school sports teams and activities groups often have financial needs for things occurring during their season. It may be uniforms, other equipment, transportation, officials and a plethora of other potential needs. To help keep student fees low, these groups turn to fundraisers.

The Raiders swim and dive teams and the football team have historically done a car wash to help offset some of their costs. They both had theirs this weekend and were very excited about the support they received from the community.

Football used to hold their fundraiser in the Green Mill parking lot, but the closure of Green Mill and the addition of the Quill apartments eliminated that location. Shane Lanning, assistant soccer coach and local insurance agent has been a huge supporter of the groups using his business location at 1350 S. Frontage Road. The lot is perfectly set up for it and he has plenty of water pressure to support the multiple hoses used. Swim and Dive has done theirs there for a few years, and now football has transitioned to the Farmers Insurance lot as well.

Swim and Dive held theirs Saturday and the kids had a great time, even with the heat. Football held theirs Sunday and again, the turnout was awesome.

A good reporter goes through the line to see the quality of work, right? My Saturday was spent working in the heat, so I missed the Swim and Dive wash, but I did get the football team to wash my truck. They did a great job on the wash and rinse side and for the drying process, they used squeegees to clear the glass and had dozens of towels drying on a line to cycle through to make sure they were able to dry the vehicles quickly.

The teams always seem to have a fun time with this team building event and everyone is expected to participate. The Football wash is a lot longer than the others because they have so many kids to help, so they work in shifts.

These fall car washes usually take place around the middle of August, and there is no reason to believe the location will change next year. So, pull out your phone and give yourself a reminder on the August 10 and 17 to look at the Raider sports pages on social media to see when they are doing their car wash, then head on out to support them. Next year, they are going to get both the truck and the motorcycle to wash from my end.

Best of luck to all our Raiders this fall season!
