Roland “Ron” James Gilbertson, age 91, of Hastings, MN, passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family.

Ron was born on August 12, 1933, in Red Wing, MN, to Reynold “Ray” and Annie (Berguson) Gilbertson. After graduating from Red Wing High School in 1951, Ron served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Katherine “Kay” Brennen. Their 69 years together were a testament to their devotion, built on love, laughter, and an enduring partnership. They were blessed with three children, Brenda Gilbertson Riley, Mark Gilbertson (Lisa), and Mike Gilbertson, along with three cherished granddaughters, Danielle Converse (Jake), Brittany Schmidt (Rob), and Jenna Ferrin (Mike). He is also lovingly remembered by his six great-grandchildren—Nora, Naomi, Max, Griffin, Julian, and Rose—who affectionately called him “Grandpa Rollie.” Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Reynold “Ray” and Annie Gilbertson, other cherished family members, and many of his life long friends. He is also survived by his baby sister, Bev McIntyre, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ron’s career as IT Director at Smead Manufacturing was fondly remembered by his humor, and genuine care for his colleagues. Beyond his career, Ron was deeply rooted in his community. As a member of the Hastings Jaycee’s, Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the Legion, he gave his time generously, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh. His faith was very central to his life, and he was involved with Stephen’s Ministry at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, finding joy in supporting those in need.

Ron had a remarkable gift for connection. He had a unique ability for making others feel valued, turning strangers into friends with his warm conversations. His quick wit and sense of humor brightened every gathering. His known love of sports was legendary, particularly for basketball. Ron held season tickets to the Minnesota Vikings and the Golden Gophers men’s basketball games, savoring every minute from his center-court seat at Williams Arena. As a basketball coach at St. Boniface school, he left a lasting mark on countless young athletes, many of whom still remember him fondly as “Coach.” Especially as a devoted grandfather, he was always there for his granddaughters, rarely missing a single game or event.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Allina Hospice team for their exceptional care and support, enabling Ron to remain at home, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly, until his final days.

Ron’s legacy lives on in the laughter he shared, the lives he touched, and the family he adored. He will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
