The Raider girls basketball team battled back in the second half but couldn’t catch up in a 67-57 Saturday matinee game on the home court.
It was a busy afternoon at the school, with Raider supporters able to catch the choir concert and stick around to check out the Raider girls game.
It was a busy week for Hastings, which started the week with a 63-53 win over Ellsworth on Tuesday. On Friday, the Raiders fell to Kasson Mantorville by a 61-50 margin. Saturday, Rochester John Marshall beat Hastings by a 67-57 score.
All three games were at home, and the homestretch continues with a game Thursday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. against Bloomington Kennedy. The Hastings Holiday Tournament then will be played Dec. 28-29, with the Raiders slated to play Irondale at 7 p.m. Dec. 28. Also participating are Farmington and Northfield.
The Raiders open up Metro East Conference play Jan. 5 at Tartan.
With four players in double figures, Ellsworth couldn’t keep up with the Raiders as the tough week started with a win. Keagan McVicker scored 15 points, Haley Strain had 14, Emma Bakker 13 and Lindsey Wagner 10 to overwhelm the Panthers. Sophia Swanson, Jillian McTague and Ellie Magnus had three points teach for Hastings, and Kate Ruder added two.
McVicker had seven assists on the game. Bakker dominated the glass with 13 rebounds.
Hastings stormed back from a seven-point deficit at halftime, with the Panthers entering intermission up 31-24. Hastings outscored their out-of-state foe 39-22 in the second stanza.
In the losing effort against Kasson-Mantorville, Bakker again had a big game, finishing with a game high 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Komets opened up a 25-24 halftime advantage down the stretch to put the Raiders away.
McVicker added 13 points, and Wagner had 11. Wagner and Bakker weach connected on three three-pointers.
On the defensive side, McVicker and Wagner each finished with four steals.
It’s tough to come back with no days off, and the Raiders started a little slow against John Marshall, falling behind early and trailing 35-26 at the half.
Strain connected on 11-16 shots from the floor to pace the Raiders with 22 points. McVicker added 13 and Bakker 10. Wagner had five points, Ruder 3 and Piper Brockman and Magnus two each.
