The Hastings Raiders Girls basketball team was ready to roll in a home game against North St. Paul on Monday night. Coming off of two close wins, the Raiders looked like they wanted to capitalize on dominating the weakest team in the conference. And that is exactly what they did. It was all Raiders to start the game as they quickly jumped out to a 20-3 lead with 11 minutes to go in the first half thanks in part to solid defensive play and great shot selection. It seemed like the Raiders were able to score easily and the Polars had a difficult time even getting shots.

Head Coach Scott Addyman had this to say, “Coming off of two straight wins in very competitive games, our girls were ready to push the ball and attack early! As planned, we spent a lot of time at the freethrow line! Our girls were able to score in transition as well as in a half-court offensive set.”

The Raiders purposefully slowed things down in the second half to work on some of their half court offensive sets.

“Having a 30 point lead at half time gave us the opportunity to get reps in things that we have been focusing on in practice, with an emphasis on shot selection.” said Addyman. It was a good strategy to keep the Polars at bay but also sharpen their offense.

The Polars actually outscored the Raiders 23-22 in the second half but it didn’t matter as that huge lead in the first half was all they needed to go on to a 67-38 victory putting the Raiders at 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

11 Raiders scored in the contest but it was Lilly Nuytten who led the charge dropping in 24 points, including 12-13 from the line, and grabbing 13 rebounds. Freshman Emma Bakker added nine while 8th grader Keagan Mc-Vivker had eight.

“I’m very proud of how well our girls played team basketball, and we are excited for three straight practices before competing in South St. Paul, Friday night,” said Coach Addyman.

The Raiders Keagan McVicker, 5’9” eighth grader at guard, posts up for a shot against North St. Paul. McVicker finished the game with eight points for the Raiders.
