Just two weeks ago, on Jan. 29, the Hastings Nordic Ski Team finished third at the conference meet at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington. The Raiders were led by three skiers that had the potential to race well enough at sections to make their way to the MSHSL State Nordic Ski meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. At the Conference Meet, the leading Raider’s Skiers were Micah Trost and Parker Stoltz for the boys and Linnea Ronning for the girls. Ronning took home the title of Conference Champion while Trost and Stoltz finished sixth and seventh respectively.
The teams returned to Hyland Park Reserve on Feb. 4 for the Section 1A Nordic Championships where they faced off against nine other teams to earn a trip to the state meet. Nordic Skiing mimics the state qualifying process of cross country running. The two fastest teams and the four fastest individuals not part of the top two teams go to the state meet.
For the boys, Eric Anderson of Lake City was the individual section champion with a total time of 25:09. The Co-op team of Winona / Cotter earned first with 389 points, The co-op team of Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eagan (RAVE) placed second with 381 points, both earning a trip to the state meet. Hastings finished fifth overall for the team event with a score of 343.
Individually, Trost finished the competition with a total time of 28:18 which put him in tenth place overall. The tenth-place finish also qualified him for the State Tournament as an individual. Stoltz finished 16th with a time of 30:32. Gabe Peterson finished 21st with a time of 31:18, David Tireman finished 27th with a time of 33:31 and Finn Cullen finished 35th with a time of 38:05.
On the girl’s side of the leaderboard, Hastings only had two girls compete, making a team win mathematically impossible. The two-girl combination of Ronning and Danae Trost placed ninth of 11 teams. Individually, Ronning finished 15th overall with a time of 33:40, one minute and 41 seconds faster than her time on the same course just six days prior. Trost also made a huge improvement from her Conference race time, dropping 1:50 to finish the section race in 37:34, good for 27th place.
The Nordic State Meet is scheduled for February 12 and 13 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN.
