Construction is never fun to deal with, especially road construction. Highway 316 is a vital route for not only Hastings’s residents to get around the south end of town, but also regional travel between Hastings, Red Wing and beyond.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation invites the public to a virtual meeting on Thursday, April 29 to learn about upcoming construction and detours on Highway 316 between the north junction of Highway 61 and Michael Avenue in Hastings. A formal presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by time for questions.

Crews will begin re-constructing the road in early May as part of the season long project to add three roundabouts and a new trail. Highway 316 will be closed and detoured in different areas through November 2021.

To learn more about the project and for a link to the virtual meeting on April 29, visit mndot.gov/metro/projects/hwy316.

One good thing to come from COVID is businesses have adapted to offer virtual options for meetings. That means you can stay in your pajamas in your comfy lounge chair and still join various informational meetings around town. MNDOT does a great job taking into account other limitations people may have to attending meetings. Their public meeting accommodations encourage participation by all. If you need an ASL, a foreign language interpreter, or other reasonable accommodation, or need documents in an alternative format (such as braille or large print), please email your request to Janet Miller at [email protected] or call 651366-4720.

The work that has been occurring so far is pre-work by utility companies. The intent of the utilities working on their services early is to help prevent outages and dangerous situations during the main phase of construction.

While the interruptions will be inconvenient during the construction, MDOT is planning on maintaining residents access to their homes as close to 100% as possible and they are committed to communicating changes as quickly as possible. The expectation is to utilize the above listed website as a key communication source.
