HASTINGS, Minn. — Dakota County Commissioner Mike Slavik today announced his campaign for re-election to represent District 1, pledging to continue delivering responsible leadership, strong fiscal stewardship, and common-sense solutions that keep Dakota County one of the best places in Minnesota to live, work, and raise a family.
Since first being elected in 2012, Slavik has built a record of putting taxpayers first while helping guide Dakota County through unprecedented growth, economic opportunity, and changing community needs. Throughout his service, he has consistently advocated for efficient government, protection of natural resources, strong public safety, and investments that improve quality of life without placing unnecessary burdens on taxpayers.
“Public service is about delivering results, not headlines,” Slavik said. “I am running for re-election because Dakota County is strong, but there is more work to do. Now more than ever, as counties are seeing significant shifts and mandates from the State of Minnesota and federal government, we need experienced leadership that will lead us through these challenging times and prepare our communities for the future.”
In addition to his service on the County Board, Slavik currently holds leadership positions as Chair of the Vermillion River Watershed Joint Powers Organization and Chair of the Dakota 911 Board of Directors. Slavik’s leadership extends beyond Dakota County. He recently served as President of the Association of Minnesota Counties, representing county governments across the state and working with state leaders to advocate for local control, responsible governance, and policies that strengthen communities. His service has helped ensure Dakota County has a respected voice on issues affecting residents at the local, regional, state and national levels.
“Whether it’s advocating for transportation funding, improving county services, preserving our natural resources, supporting economic development, or protecting taxpayer dollars, I’ve always focused on practical solutions and measurable results,” Slavik said. “The challenges facing local government require experience, collaboration, and a willingness to make tough decisions. That’s the leadership I will continue to provide.”
As part of his 2026 campaign, Slavik outlined several key priorities:
• Protecting Taxpayers through responsible budgeting, efficient government operations, and careful management of county resources.
• Supporting Public Safety by ensuring law enforcement, emergency response personnel, and public safety partners have the resources necessary to keep communities safe.
• Investing in Infrastructure by maintaining and improving roads, bridges, and transportation systems that support residents, businesses, and future growth.
• Promoting Economic Growth by fostering a business-friendly environment that attracts investment, creates jobs, and strengthens local communities.
• Preserving Quality of Life through continued support for parks and trails, and protection of our natural resources, open spaces and farmland that make Dakota County a destination for families and businesses alike.
• Preparing for the Future by making strategic investments that address long-term challenges while maintaining financial stability for future generations.

Slavik thanked residents throughout District 1 for their trust and support over the years and said he looks forward to continuing conversations with voters across the district in the months ahead.
“I’ve never forgotten who I work for,” Slavik said. “The people of District 1 deserve a commissioner who is accessible, accountable, and focused on serving their interests every day. It has been an honor to serve, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue that service.”
