(Hastings, MN. Sept. 23, 2020) The president of the 23,000 member Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) joined State Senator Karla Bigham and Hastings School Board Chair and state representative nominee Kelsey Waits at a grassroots campaign event in legislative district 54B on Sunday, September 20. District 54B includes Hastings, Nininger Twp., Denmark Twp., Afton and part of Cottage Grove. The nurses’ union, including the 120 nurses working at Regina Hospital in Hastings, has endorsed Bigham and Waits.

“For nearly 20 years, the American people have held nurses in the highest regard when it comes to public trust,” said MNA President Mary Turner, a COVID-19 intensive care unit night shift staff nurse. “People know nurses put the care in health care. We support legislators who support us in providing high quality care without risking our own lives. And we support candidates who know our healthcare system needs substantial reform so a horribly mismanaged pandemic like this one never happens again.”

Bigham noted, “Nurses are our frontline heroes in the fight against COVID-19. I am proud to stand with them to ensure we stop the virus and to fight for access to affordable healthcare.” Bigham serves on the Minnesota Senate committees focused on funding for environment and natural resources, human services, and veterans affairs.

Waits, the Democratic nominee for the district 54B seat said, “As Hastings School Board Chair, I know how important nurses are to promote health in our schools and communities. We are lucky to have a full service hospital so close by, with nurses who are invaluable to the quality care delivered there. My mother was a nurse, and I learned from her that if you want to know what’s really going on in healthcare, ask a nurse. My door will always be open to nurses’ ideas and concerns.”

Voting began on September 18 and continues through election day, November 3. To learn how to vote in person or by absentee ballot, go to the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website, mnvotes.org.
