To the editor:
We must stop embracing false dichotomies in our school board election. Creating a “I support parent” vs “I support
teachers” dichotomy serves political people and interest groups; it does not serve our students or community.
Parents that support teachers and work WITH THEM is in our students’ best interest. Teach our students respect
for teachers – even if they differ from our viewpoint or ideology. Express appreciation for our teachers,
administrators, and paras. Read the notes, newsletters, emails, and other communications school staff took time
to write. Find out how you can support teachers with snacks, supplies or classroom help. Volunteer for activities
and support the PTA!
We need to take the time to partner WITH each other rather than agree with one group or the other. It is easier to
take up our pitchforks and point out what other people are doing wrong. It is superior and more difficult to look for
what’s going right and find ways to support that. ISD #200 has so many strengths! Our arts and music programs
are amazing. The coaches I’ve interacted with are top notch. We have many teachers with experience and
longevity. What if all our energy went to support and promote these amazing efforts? We would be the most
desirable school district in the country.
Of course, get out and meet the school board candidates and learn who you are voting for. Don’t take one
person’s word for it – learn as much as you can! Learn about the technology levy and make an honest
assessment of what is best for future generations. Let’s stop asking ourselves and others which side we are on
and start doing more for our teachers and schools. It is the only way to build and be a strong community.
