Letter to the Editor: How can people afford this?

To the Editor:
I consider myself a lifelong resident, with family in Hastings for generations. Going through the shops of Second Street, walking through Levee Park, fishing off Lake Rebecca, or feeling the spray of water from Vermillion Falls, this is my hometown.
But I have a concern. With prices increasing along with fees and taxes, it is making it harder to enjoy the town I grew up in. I’ve talked with people who are trying to get ahead. With everything going up, it’s bringing their spirits down. Some are struggling, and the increases are adding to the stress.
I understand there is a cost to things that need to get done, but don’t people deserve a break? Last year in 2024 the property tax levy was proposed to increase by 7.34 percent. In 2025 the levy will increase by an additional 7.5 percent. This makes me think just because the city sees home values going up that doesn’t mean the residents’ income has matched. Then with water fees increasing 10 percent last January, another 10 percent at the beginning of July, and the City Administrator saying water rates could potentially double in three years and triple in five, how can people afford this?
After talking with friends, family, and neighbors I think a break is in order. A break on the rising fees and taxes so people have a chance to catch up. At least a two-year pause on the increases could help give hope to those building a life in Hastings. Not just to survive, but to make Hastings a place so people can thrive.
