A throng of people came out to support Hastings Family Service and welcome the CPKC Holiday Train on a chilly Saturday evening Dec. 9.

Families came from all over for the annual holiday treat, which came complete with a fresh, light snowfall. The decked out Christmas train from the Canadian Pacific-Kansas City Southern Railroad that takes to the tracks for good reason. The Holiday Train makes stops all over the United States and Canada, raising money, food and awareness for the important work food banks do in their communities.

The Hastings crowd cheered as the lights from the train could be seen to the south of the Hastings depot on Second Street. Young and old alike clamored to the security tape near the tracks for the first glimpse. As the train pulled to its stop across Second Street, the center car opened into a stage where American singer and songwriter Breland performed. A ceremony was held prior to Canadian country performer Tenille Townes taking to the stage.

True to its pledge, the CPKC Holiday Train gifted Hastings Family Service with a check for $4,500 and urged those in attendance to donate also.

Hastings Mayor Mary Fasbender thanked the train for making its annual stop, saying it’s become a big part of the Hastings holiday season.

Hastings Family Service Executive Director Amy Sutton thanked the CPKC for the generous donation and for helping point out the need of food for families in Hastings and across the country.

She closed her remarks by leading the crowd in a resounding, “Thank you from Hastings!”
