Hastings residents interested in serving on the Hastings Public Schools Board of Education will have a two-week window to file for candidacy this summer, with three seats on the ballot in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, general election.
The candidate filing period for Independent School District No. 200 opens Tuesday, July 14, and closes Tuesday, July 28, at 5 p.m. Candidates must file an affidavit of candidacy with the school district clerk at the district office, located at 1000 W. 11th St. in Hastings, and pay the $2 filing fee before the deadline.
District officials noted that the district offices are closed on Fridays during the filing period, so candidates should plan accordingly when preparing to submit their paperwork.
The election will fill three school board seats with terms expiring Dec. 31, 2026. The directors whose seats are up for election are Carrie Tate, board chairperson, Mark Zuzek, treasurer, and Jessica Dressely, vice chair. The four remaining school board members have terms that expire Jan. 1, 2029.
School board members in Hastings Public Schools serve four-year terms. As of June 26, 2024, board members are elected in even years.
After the filing period closes July 28, candidates who file will have until Thursday, July 30, at 5 p.m. to withdraw from the race. Absentee voting begins Friday, Sept. 18, giving voters more than six weeks to cast ballots before Election Day.
The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 3. The last day to canvass the election is Friday, Nov. 13, and the new term for elected board members begins Monday, Jan. 4, 2027.
School board elections play a direct role in local education decisions, including district policy, budgets, staffing, curriculum direction, facilities planning and long-term district goals. Board members also work with district administration, staff, families and community members while helping set the direction for Hastings Public Schools.
With three seats on the ballot, the 2026 election will give voters a chance to decide who will help guide the district for the next four years.
