Saturday, March 26, both the DFL and the GOP held their conventions to determine who the parties would endorse all over the state. With the redistricting that occurs every 10 years across the state, this year’s election will see major changes around the area. Two of those changes involve Hastings grads and classmates, Shane Hudella and Tina Folch. Hastings will officially be part of District 41 for the Minnesota Senate and 41B for the Minnesota House.

The 41B race will be all Hastings, as Hudella and Folch will face off for the House seat.

Hudella explained his experience for the convention. “Prior to the convention, I had to go through vetting from the delegates to a subcommittee of delegates, just to be allowed to run and come before the convention. And it was a process, a very long process today, the convention has administrative work and appointments that they do among the delegates. But when it comes time for candidates to make their pitch, someone has to nominate you. And I had Chaplain Ken Beale from Fort Snelling get up and give the nomination speech for me. Then I got to go up and speak for five minutes, all the candidates are bound to the same timing. Then once all three of the candidates speak, it goes right to a vote.”

“It is a good experience to go to those just to understand the mechanics,” explained Folch. “How much of a process there is in all of that, but it's a wonderful experience because it's a community. It's neighbors that you have known for forever that you get to see. It's a great opportunity to come together with folks who have like-minded value systems and to talk about what's important. It's a lot of relationship building.”

On the DFL side of the aisle, Folch earned the endorsement. She was unopposed for the House Seat.

Folch is currently on the Hastings City Council. “You cannot hold two elected offices at once, so I would have to step down. My understanding is, the mayor has the ability to make an appointment until the next election, which will be in two years.”

Part of her experience being on City Council includes multiple committees, but she has both hope and concerns from the way people have been recently.

“I believe in collaboration, and I'm probably one of the biggest advocates on our city council for doing good by the business community and working across a wide variety of different issues that try to do good by our community,” said Folch. “So, I really, truly believe that we should be working together to advance common goals and honestly, I'm a little startled about the tribalism that we're seeing developed within the community where folks are. Pitting themselves neighbors against neighbors over issues which is really troubling. We have good people in our community, and I think that it's disheartening when we have division, and there's open conflict. It's not them against us, it's about us together, and how do we thrive? How do we make our economies grow? How do we raise the best children? How do we take care of our elderly, and those who are committed to serving us, such as law enforcement or fire departments and vets?”

For the GOP, Shane Hudella had two others vying for the endorsement: Leilani Holmstadt and Grayson McNew. When there are multiple choices for the endorsement, one person must win 60 percent of the delegates votes. With the two others involved, the first vote had Hudella as the leader with 51 percent. They eliminated the lowest vote recipient and revoted with just the top two where Hudella won.

“We were all great candidates for this position and there was a lot of respect in the room. We were congratulating each other. At the end of the day, I think I'll have great support from those other House candidates, both Leilani and Grayson, and then some great support from the Senate candidates that were there today as well. It was my first day in politics and I’m 1-0, so I'm pretty pumped. There is a lot of great momentum in the Republican Party right now. To support each other, to go out and fight to get our constitutional rights back, to get our freedoms back, and to get values instilled in our society.” added Hudella.

Don’t let Hudella’s political newness scare you. Hudella created a non-profit for military families called Defending the Blue Line. The mission was simple, provide hockey equipment for military kids of parents who were deployed to help ease the burden of deployment. That quickly expanded into what is now the United Heroes League, a very successful nationwide non-profit. He also served in the military himself for 24 years where he learned to adapt and overcome.

The race for the newly formed 41B house seat will be an interesting one to follow for Hastings area residents.
