On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Hastings Middle School (HMS) received a bomb threat at 3:17 p.m. after school had ended for the day. Despite school being over, more than 100 students were still in the building for various activities including play practice for “Seussical Jr.”
The building was evacuated with students taken onto buses. Hastings police, including a canine officer, swept the building and Hastings Middle School was cleared by 5 p.m. that day.
“The event went as well as it could,” said Hastings Police Chief Dave Wilske at the Nov. 7 School Board Work Session when discussing the event.
An HMS student called in the threat via a district radio. That student has been identified although the investigation is ongoing.
“We are just glad the school is safe and it’s not a potentially ongoing threat,” said Wilske.
In a letter about the incident Superintendent Champa wrote, “On behalf of the Hastings School District, I apologize for the disruption; however, safety will always be our priority.”
School continued on Wednesday, Nov. 6 as usual.
