Hastings Middle School false alarm

Hastings Middle School experienced at least two false fire alarms on May 16. The first alarm went off around 7:35 a.m. just as students were entering the building for the day. The staff at the middle school took the alarm seriously, evacuated the building and worked with the fire department to assure there was no threat to the building. The alarm went off a second time shortly after 9:00 a.m. but was quickly silenced. Middle School Principal Ryan Wynn emailed parents the following message about the steps taken during the day.
Good morning HMS Families.
I wanted to provide a quick update and reassurance regarding the fire alarm this morning at Hastings Middle School.
Right at 7:35 AM, just as students were beginning to enter the building for the school day, a faulty smoke detector in the elevator triggered the fire alarm system. As a precaution, we treated it as an actual fire and worked alongside the Hastings Fire Department to ensure the building was safe before allowing students and staff back inside.
We appreciate the patience and flexibility of our families during this time, especially those navigating the drop-off line and encouraging students to wait outside as we followed our safety protocols. We are grateful for everyone’s cooperation in helping us keep students safe.
Thank you again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ryan Wynn
Principal
Thankfully, there never was a threat to the students, staff or facilities and that it was quickly discovered and the school day resumed.
