Hastings’ grueling schedule prepares wrestlers for postseason

Posted

With the high school wrestling postseason just over a month away, Coach Tim Haneberg and his staff are getting this year’s Raider squad ready, meet after meet and tournament after tournament.
Hastings is the defending Division 3A state championship team, and this year’s squad would like nothing other than to finish as a team at the Xcel Energy Center again.
“We always strive to be highly competitive in the AAA division of the state. One of the goals every year is to win a section team title and qualify for the team state tournament,” said Haneberg.
There are a lot of new wrestlers stepping up for the Raiders this year.
“One thing that is impressing about this year’s team is the new wrestlers we have in the lineup. We replaced seven seniors who graduated last year, and the wrestlers who have stepped into the lineup have been doing a phenomenal job.
Weekend after weekend, the Raiders have been taking to the road, competing against some of the best competition not only in Minnesota, but in neighboring states as well. There’s a reason for that.
“Our schedule is one of the toughest in the state. We set it up this way to battle test our wrestlers and expose them to the best wrestlers possible. By the time we reach the postseason, our wrestlers are prepared for any competition,” said Haneberg.
This year’s team is led by Blake and Trey Beissel, but there is a lot of talent on the mat.
“Obviously, the Beissel brothers put on a performance every time they are on the mat,” said Haneberg. “Derrick Steinke and Creed Peterson are pinning machines as well. We also have seasoned wrestlers like Jack Bainbridge and Mark Svoboda who are having phenomenal seasons as well.”
Hastings dominated at the Farmington Koda Classic dual matches Saturday. The raiders beat Lakeville North 45-23 in match one and then shut out Rochester Century in round two of action. In round three, Hastings defeated Farmington 46-20 and beat Westfield in the final match 60-12.
