A 2013 Hastings High School Graduate, Cole Spavin, was recently inducted as the President of the Optimist Club of West St. Paul. Previous Club President John Rheinberger, now the district’s Lt. Governor, passed the gavel in a ceremony that took place on October 7th. Spavin became a member in 2013, serving in several positions before taking on the leadership role for the club’s 50th year. “Giving back is something everyone should do, and I like being able to help others,” said Spavin who will coordinate duties that guide the club through several projects that serve local youth. The club has been responsible for several youth projects, most notably, chairing the District 197 Spelling Bee for over 20 years. Optimists throughout the world provide support for many types of youth programs and tailor their projects to fit the needs of the youth in their communities. The Optimist Club members are starting off their year, which runs from October 1st to September 30th, by making plans for projects that may have to be done in a new way, See Club President Page 3
