The girls’ basketball season started with a win followed up by three losses. Since that time, the Raiders have only had a back-toback loss once. High school sports successes rely on positive streaks. Stringing together several wins with the occasional regular season loss is a great recipe for success. Hastings has done that superbly this season, including the most recent three games.
After winning on Jan. 20th against Two Rivers, the Raiders faced Hill-Murray and Simley. The Raider defense has proven to be a stingy bunch for most of this season and head coach Trent Hanson has stated previously, if they can keep opponents under 40 points, they feel they can win that game. The final against Two Rivers? 48-25. Could they keep that going?
The Pioneers (9-8) were the first victim for the week. The two played each other tough for the first half of the game with multiple turnovers and takeaways in transition by both teams, but Hastings came out on top 24-21 at the half. The second half was more of the same, both teams taking shots that were not falling, especially for Hill-Murray. Hastings slowly increased their lead and ultimately won the game 46-35.
Keagan McVicker led scoring with 14 points, Haley Strain had 12 rebounds and McVicker had four assists in the win.
Against the 2-15 Simley Spartans, the defensive domination was a bit more evident. Hastings held Simley to five second half points enroute to a 41-22 win. Strain had the lead for points with 19 and shared the lead for rebounds with Emma Bakker at ten.
The Raiders will travel to Tartan on Feb. 3rd, then back home on Feb. 7th to host the second place Polars from North St. Paul in a battle for the Metro East Conference lead. All of the remaining regular season games for Hastings are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. tips as of this printing, and the seven remaining games are all against conference opponents so things could get interesting.
