Gerald F. “Jerry” Bauer, a lifelong farmer in Marshan Township, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday morning, February 16, 2024, at the age of 80.

Gerald Frank, the son of George and Rosella (Werner) Bauer, was born on February 21, 1943, in Hastings. Following his graduation from Hastings High School with the class of 1961, Jerry enlisted in the United States National Guard and was later granted an Honorable Discharge. On January 21, 1964, Jerry was united in marriage to Joann M. Gergen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Trier. They were blessed with two children and many wonderful memories over their sixty-years of marriage.

Jerry was a lifelong farmer and still lived on the original family farm that he was born and raised on, and was grateful to farm side by side with his son, Brian. Outside of tending to his land, Jerry was a committed and loyal member of the Marshan Township Board and a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus for many years. When time allowed, he enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, spending time with their grandchildren, and was often found visiting with family and friends. Jerry had a passion for restoring classic John Deere tractors and was proud to display them at many local events over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Joann; children, Brenda (Mike) Olson and Brian (Kelly) Bauer; six grandchildren, Tressa (Josh) Berghammer, Rachel (Dave) Propst, Matthew Olson, Lori (Josh) Post, Robyn Bauer, and Allison (Jacob) Stephani; five great grandchildren, Brady, Brielle, Lexi, Addy, and Jehonna; siblings, Rita (Vern) Hall, Bernice (Ted) Steele, Bill (Gina) Bauer, and Janice (Larry) Thomas; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father David Hennen officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 will follow at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings, and from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at church on Tuesday morning. A reception will be held at church on Tuesday following the Mass as well.
