A cold January morning did little to slow things down at Lake Rebecca Park on Saturday, Jan. 10, as families, friends, and first-time anglers bundled up for a free ice fishing event hosted by the City of Hastings through Parks and Recreation.
By midday, 75 groups had registered for the event, turning the frozen lake into a busy winter gathering spot filled with laughter, steaming mugs of cocoa, and the steady scrape of boots on snow covered ice. For many, it was a chance to try ice fishing without needing to own any gear or know where to start.
Everything was provided. Bait, tackle, poles, and hands on instruction were available, along with predrilled holes that removed some of the intimidation for newcomers. Experienced ice anglers volunteered their time on the ice, offering guidance, answering questions, and helping participants learn how to jig and set hooks properly.
The event was designed to be accessible to everyone. A fishing license was not required under a special Department of Natural Resources permit, and all fishing was catch and release. Supplies were available on site until noon, giving attendees plenty of time to fish, warm up, and take part in the other activities.
A warming station with hot cocoa proved popular as temperatures stayed firmly in winter territory. Kids and adults alike rotated between fishing holes and the warmup area, where gloves were dried, hands were warmed, and stories about near misses and small catches were shared.
Giveaways added to the excitement throughout the morning. Support from local businesses and organizations made it possible to offer fishing gear, tackle, and prize drawings, including an ice suit drawing that drew plenty of interest. Additional bait and supplies helped keep lines in the water and smiles on faces.
The event was hosted by Hastings Parks and Recreation in partnership with Carpenter Nature Center, with support from a range of community sponsors who contributed gear, supplies, and funding. Organizers also extended special thanks to the experienced ice anglers who volunteered on site, helping ensure the event ran smoothly and safely.
As the morning wrapped up, Lake Rebecca Park slowly quieted, leaving behind footprints in the snow and plenty of memories. For many participants, the event offered a simple winter pleasure, a chance to be outdoors, learn something new, and enjoy a classic Minnesota pastime together.
