The fifth grade food drive started with Mrs. Eischen’s class in 1983. It came about as a result of a religion lesson. Since then, the fifth grade has taken it on as their service project for the year. All food and money donated goes to Hastings Family Service, which has operated a food shelf since the early 1900’s. The food shelf has been in operation through several presidents, wars, a variety of economic conditions, and tragedies like 9/11. The 4th grade will be taking over during this year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many families requesting food stated that someone has missed a meal at least once in the last month because they did not have enough money to purchase it. It is usually an adult who skips meals or eats small portions so the children can eat. Generally, half the people who utilize the food shelf are working. Major reasons for visiting the food shelf include unemployment, major expenses such as medical bills and car repairs, and illness of a family member. COVID-19 has severely impacted food security this year.

This year’s food drive will run from March 8-19. We are asking each student from K-8th Grade to EARN $5.00 or 5 food items to donate to the drive. No such requirement for Preschool! Anything that is donated will be appreciated. March is Minnesota FoodShare month so all of our donations will be proportionately matched. Also, monetary donations go a long way since HFS utilizes Second Harvest Heartland and can buy food for as little as $0.12 a pound.

As donations come in, please keep all food items in your room and send all money to the office. A document will be coming where you can record each day how much money and how many items were brought in. You might want to set a goal for your classroom and if they meet it you can offer an incentive like extra recess.

Please let your families know about the Food Drive via classroom newsletters, etc. Announcements will also be in the School eNews. We will be sending you a folder of commercials that the 4th graders created that you can show your students. Thank you for your help!!
