The Hastings High School girls basketball season-opener on Tuesday, Nov. 28 had an extended halftime break because of a fire alarm at the school.
An active fire in a trash can in the metals shop in the high school forced evacuation of the gym.
High school custodians kept the fire contained to the garbage can.
The Hastings Fire Department responded to the incident and made sure the situation was taken care of prior to letting fans re-enter the building about 20 minutes after the gym was evacuated.
The call came into the HFD at 7:39 p.m., and custodians had tracked the location of the fire to the metals shop.
The room was not occupied when the fire alarm was sounded, and the fire department is investigating what started on fire in the garbage can.
